State President Trương Tấn Sang said that there was great potential to develop tourism in the Central Highlands, especially in Da Lat and Lam Dong

President Sang said that, since it was established 120 years ago, Da Lat city has established itself as a tourist attraction with its many affectionate nicknames including ‘the romantic city’ and ‘the kingdom of flowers’.

He also praised the contributions made by Da Lat city and Lam Dong province to the national resistance wars against foreign invaders, expressing his hope that the city Party committee and people will exert their efforts to enhance the city’s prosperity and the country’s development.

On the occasion, President Sang presented the Labour Order, third class, to Lam Dong province in recognition of the contributions made by the locality’s authorities and people to the national construction and defence.

The opening ceremony drew the participation of nearly 1,700 actors and actresses from provinces in the Central Highlands – Dak Lak, Gia Lai, Dac Nong, Kon Tum and Lam Dong – who brought to the stage artistic and musical performances highlighting the diverse cultures of ethnic groups living in the Central Highlands.

The week, which runs until December 31, includes a flower exhibition, an international seminar on the UNESCO Heritage Network in Southeast Asia, a conference on Da Lat’s flowers and tourism and a street carnival, as well as a wide range of cultural and art events.

At the ceremony, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh announced the launch of the 2014 National Tourism Year, to be organised by the culture ministry and host participants from the Central Highland provinces of Lam Dong, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai and Kon Tum throughout next year.

While commending the long standing tradition, unique culture, charming festivals and imposing beauty of its mountain ranges and forests, Minister Anh said the year long programme is designed to honour the cultural treasures of the Central Highlands region, which have been preserved, upheld and enriched through many generations across different eras in the nation’s history.

The programme is also held in the joint effort of the hospitality sector to place tourism among the key economic industries of the region and the country, he added.

According to Lam Dong provincial People’s Committee Vice Chairman Doan Van Viet, Da Lat has welcomed more than 4.3 million visitors since the beginning of this year, and the city is expected to receive over 5 million tourists next year.
